New research has shown that malnutrition in the womb permanently changes the structure and function of the body. It leads to heart disease, diabetes and stroke in later life.

“Dr. David Barker’s ground breaking research has irrevocably influenced the way in which the medical and nutrition community now views optimal development.”

— Eileen Kennedy, Dean, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University

“Barker’s book gives us the unique opportunity to reexamine the role of nutrition throughout life, and place the emphasis where it really makes a difference, in early life. Good nutrition begins in the womb. It is time for this novel insight to make it into policy and practice.”

— Ricardo Uauy, President of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences

“History will show that David Barker’s discoveries changed the face of medicine.”

— Kent Thornburg, Director, Heart Research Center, Oregon Health and Science University

“We have been delighted to support this pivotal research.”

— Professor Sir Charles George, former Medical Director, British Heart Foundation

Coronary heart disease was rare one hundred years ago. Now it is the most common cause of death in the world. Diet, smoking, lifestyles are blamed; but still we do not know why one person gets heart disease while another does not.

New research has shown that malnutrition in the womb permanently changes the structure and function of the body. It makes people vulnerable to heart disease, diabetes and stroke in later life. This book explains why people whose birthweights were towards the lower end of the normal range have less healthy lives; and describes what can be done to protect their health.

A mother’s capacity to nourish her baby is built up by good nutrition throughout her life. The health of the next generation depends on the nutrition of girls and young women today. Good paths of growth and development are the greatest gift society can give to the next generation. This book sets out how this can be achieved.

The New Wife’s Tale By Jan Barker

Birth Record of a Theory

The New Wife's Tale

Jan Barker is the wife of David Barker whose work as a doctor and researcher initiated the new medical field of the Developmental Origins of Adult Health and Disease. Here she tells the human story behind the The Barker Theory.

“I am neither a scientist nor a doctor. I am a wife, mother and grandmother and my story is a personal one. My understanding of The Barker Theory is simple and on a level that everyone can understand. This book explains how that original idea was formed and its importance recognized; how the initial work of finding old birth records and tracing the subjects was done; how the records of their birth and current health status were combined; and the first analysis confirmed a link between low birth weight and heart disease.”

“I have told the story of how the Barker Theory came to be established, why David and I came to America and how The Barker Foundation began.”

This book bears a message that is important to everyone and in writing this book Jan hopes to make that message accessible to as many people as possible. All profits from the sale of THE NEW WIFE’S TALE will be donated to spread the message of The Barker Foundation.
